Chakwera: It is worrisome

Leader of opposition in Parliament Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday diverted from his response to the 2014/15 national budget to call for action on the increasing cases of robberies in the country which have resulted in deaths and injuries to citizens.

Victims of the robberies have ranged from ordinary citizens being hacked to death and robbed to a High Court judge being carjacked at gunpoint.

Three days ago, daring robbers beat the security of the official residence of the Vice-President in Blantyre and went away with assorted items.

Chakwera urged government to be serious in restoring security in the country.

He said: “It [insecurity] is increasingly worrisome. People are being hacked to death in their own homes and we have heard a case of a High Court judge being abducted in broad daylight.

“We need action against robbers who are busy terrorizing neighbourhoods and hitting hard on businesses and hard-working citizen.”

He commended Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe for the substantial increase on the budget to the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and hoped the funds allocated would bring about a difference.

Gondwe announced increases in the budgets of law enforcement agencies such as MPS, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
