Chakwera confers 8 senior counsels

President Lazarus Chakwera on Friday conferred Senior Counsel (SC) status to eight legal professionals at a ceremony held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

In his remarks, the President emphasised that the appointments were not politically-motivated, but were a legal requirement.

He urged the new SCs to uphold the integrity of their status, and carry out their duties with strict adherence to the rule of law.

The SC title is conferred by the President upon recommendation of the Honours Committee of the Malawi Law Society (MLS).

The new SCs are Healey Potani, John Nelson Katsala, Ivy Chatha Kamanga, Mankhambira Charles Ching’ani Mkandawire, Rowland Mbvundula, Dorothy NyaKaunda Kamanga, Dingiswayo Madise and Silvester Augustino Kalembera.

Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda and Attorney General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda witnessed the ceremony.

Ministry of Justice earlier postponed the conferment ceremony following queries from MLS on the eligibility of some nominees, who included Chakaka-Nyirenda, and sought clarification from the ministry on the position of the law.
