Chakwera courts clean energy investors in China

Faced with a huge energy deficit, President Lazarus Chakwera has turned to Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organisation (Geidco) to consider investing in Malawi’s energy sector.

The president made the call at Geidco headquarters in Beijing, China on Wednesday during a meeting with the firm’s management.

Chakwera said Malawi has potential to generate energy from multiple sources such as solar, wind and geothermal; hence, seeking their support.

“We believe that partnering with Geidco is crucial for Malawi to further develop the energy sector by utilising clean energy sources,” he said.

Geidco chairperson, who is also China Electricity Council president Xin Baoan, assured Chakwera that they are ready to partner Malawi to provide clean energy solutions.

“This initiative aims to convert Malawi’s abundant resource advantages into economic benefits, significantly improve electrification, achieve universal access to renewable electricity,” he said.

Malaw’s 90 percent of energy comes from hydro power through Shire River.

The government has been exploring opportunities to diversify energy sources and meanwhile solar is feeding into the grid with JCM Power contributing 80 megawatts.
