Chakwera hails working trips

President Lazarus Chakwera says Malawi is expected to benefit from his recent working trips abroad.

The President said this in an interview yesterday upon his arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe. He was returning from Berlin, Germany.

Prior to travelling to Germany, Chakwera, who was accompanied by First Lady Monica Chakwera and other government officials, first travelled to Mozambique for bilateral discussions with his counterpart Filipe Nyusi.

He later travelled to Zimbabwe where he attended the 44th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Summit in Harare.

Said Chakwera: “The fact that we are consolidating international relations is of great advantage to Malawi.

“We signed agreements to benefit from those services our neighbours can offer.”

Chakwera, who was welcomed at KIA by Vice-President Michael Usi and other senior government officials, said his trip to the three countries will also strengthen trade ties among them.

He said through the trips, Malawi can learn from success stories of neighbouring countries which is integral to Malawi’s socio-economic development.

The highlights of the President’s trip include the conferring of an honorary doctorate in international cooperation by the Joaquim Chissano University in Maputo, Mozambique, and his meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome, Italy.

Chakwera also held a meeting with some corporate executives of Germany’s Inland Water Companies in Frankfurt where discussions pertaining to investments were held at length.

His engagement with investors in Berlin, Germany, also resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Malawi Government and Sun Africa Power Development Limited for the construction of a 50 megawatt solar powered farm to be located at Choma in Mzuzu.

Mzuni vice-chancellor Professor Wales Singini, who was part of the delegation, said the solar farm will also be used by some of its Bachelor of Science in Renewable Energy Technologies’ students in their academic work
