Chakwera: I spoke against violence

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday met President Joyce Banda at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre where the two discussed the political violence reported in Thyolo, Blantyre and Mzuzu.

Chakwera disclosed this to journalists in Lilongwe yesterday during a press conference where he appealed to Malawians to refrain from violence during the campaign period, which officially starts this Friday.

Said Chakwera: “Yesterday [Tuesday] I phoned President Joyce Banda to seek audience and she accepted. We met in Blantyre where I told her that political violence should not continue.”

But Chakwera dismissed speculation that the two discussed a possible alliance towards the May 20 Tripartite Elections. He said he also phoned Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika as part of his push for a peaceful campaign.

He said MCP is shocked at the recent political-related violence that has resulted in loss of two lives and property.

He said this is not the time for violence, but to find solutions to problems the country is facing.

Banda’s adviser on communication and politics, Elias Wakuda Kamanga, said he was not aware of the meeting; hence, he had no exact details on what the two discussed.
