President Lazarus Chakwera has pledged to go beyond popularising Malawi 2063 (MW2063) by pushing for its implementation to ensure the country transforms into a self-reliant, industrialised and upper middle-income economy.

The President was speaking yesterday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe after receiving the certificate of recognition as the overall champion of the MW2063, the country’s long-term development strategy, for his efforts in instilling Malawians with hope of attaining the goals outlined in the development plan.

He stressed the need for Malawians to work together in developing the country.

Said Chakwera: “I am encouraged by the recognition to do more in pushing for the implementation of the Malawi 2063 and not just popularising it. We will also continue aligning the national budget to Malawi 2063 so that we can truly graduate by 2030 and meet most of the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs].

“I need to pull up my socks and do more, and also call on both State and non-State actors to encourage everyone not to do anything in silos but as a team.”

In his remarks, National Planning Commission  (NPC) board chairperson Professor Richard Mkandawire said the overall championship certificate was given to the President for his passion towards the MW2063, continuity of development projects and programmes beyond political regimes and his efforts in the corruption fight, among other things.

He noted that Chakwera is making stern efforts in fighting corruption both from within and outside his circle of authority as well as rallying the nation in fighting the vice.

Mkandawire said: “For example, under your leadership, a financial crimes division has now been setup at the High Court and the Anti-Corruption Bureau has been empowered with more financial and technical resources including having powers to prosecute cases without having to wait for the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“All this is meant to speedup the conclusion of financial crimes and corruption-related cases which are cancerous to our economy and the MW2063 aspirations.”

NPC has since expressed hope that the President will keep reminding Malawians to work together in achieving the Malawi that everybody wants, and promoting a new mindset of inclusive wealth creation and self-reliance and not hand-outs dependency.

Besides Chakwera, NPC has also honoured all the country’s past presidents for their inter-generational development efforts.

Other honorees include Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani-Hara and Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda who have been recognised for their efforts in building the Malawi that everybody wants.

NPC has named Vice-President Saulos Chilima as the overall mindset change champion.

Others include Candida Nankhumwa, Betty Chinyamunyamu and Ngabaghila Chatata recognised as agricultural productivity and commercialisation champions. Mdingase Tewete and Dr Grain Malunga were recognised as industrialisation and mining champions, to mention just a few.
