Students from the Chancellor College (Chanco) a constituent college of the University of Malawi had a rude awakening on Thursday morning after a fourth year student Esther Kachikuni was found dead in her room in one of the college hostels.

The deceased, 22, was pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Social Science at the college.

Zomba police spokesperson Patricia Supuliano confirmed the incident in an interview Thursday, saying Kachikuni only complained of headache on Wednesday evening.

“It was in the morning hours when her twin sister who is also a student at the college went to her room, when she knocked the door, there was no response and she found out that it was locked.”

“She then reported the matter to authorities who ordered that the room be broken into and that’s when they found her,” said Supuliano.

Supuliano said the body was taken to the College of Medicine in Blantyre awaiting postmortem.

Students Union of Chancellor College (SUCC) president Sylvester Ayuba James said the school is saddened by Kachikuni’s death.

“It is hard to believe, especially to think that we were with her at school yesterday (Wednesday) where she even sat for the day’s examination papers,” said James.
