Malawi Government has disclosed that the Robert Chasowa case will take a little longer before being taken to court because there are more investigations to be carried out.

Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs spokesperson Apoche Itimu on Sunday dismissed suggestions that the case might have been discontinued, saying there were ‘elements’ that needed further investigations.

“The Chasowa case has not been discontinued. Unfortunately, there were elements of the case that required further investigations. As such, that needed to be done prior to taking the matter to court,” said Itimu in a written response.

She said currently, investigations into the matter are entering the final stages and that once things are ready, the case would be taken to court. She could not say when.

Chasowa, a Polytechnic engineering student, was found dead on campus on September 24 2011.

Police reported that Chasowa committed suicide but an autopsy showed that he died from assault.

A number of people were arrested after the commission of inquiry report.

They included Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the South Noel Masangwi.

However, the court returned the K200 000 ($500) cash sureties that the suspects deposited with it. This created suspicions as to whether the case had any future.

Government’s announcement comes after a report on circumstances surrounding the death of Chasowa was revealed through a commission of inquiry.
