Chawinga registers first hat-trick in Chipiku League

Mtsiliza United striker James Chawinga has registered this season’s Lilongwe and Districts Football League (LDFL) first hat-trick.

He inspired Mtsiliza to a 4-2 win against visiting Mchinji Boma Stars at Silver Stadium on Saturday.

The game curtain-raised the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy semi-final between Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets, which Nomads won 4-3 on penalty shoot-outs.

This was the first win for Mtsiliza this season where they have played three games in the Premier Division.

“It is nice to go into the books as the first person to score a hat-trick. This encourages me to aim high in the race for the Golden Boot Award. I was in great form today and I thank God for this. Of course, my teammates were supportive, so I also attribute the achievement to them,” said Chawinga.

He scored in the first half to give his side a 3-1 lead.

Mchinji Boma Stars first struck through Gilert John who converted a spot kick after a Mtsiliza defender fouled a striker in the box.

Boma Stars reduced the arrears midway the last half through Thom Nyirenda. The goal rejuvenated the visitors. They had several chances, but their striking force was wasteful.

As they were busy searching for the third goal to level the scores, Samalani Matiki scored the fourth goal to seal the triumph.
