Broadcaster and comedian Nicholas Mbonera alias Che Nkope, who went for treatment for heart complications at Milpark Hospital in South Africa, is out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is responding to treatment while awaiting a heart transplant.

The artist’s brother James told The Nation yesterday that his younger sibling is on the high priority list on the heart transplant recipient list.

“We are not sure when he will go to surgery. It might take weeks even months according to how the transplant unit sees fit for him to go to surgery. Right now the doctors are working on making sure that his condition still stays stable,” said Mbonera.

Nicholas Mbonera went to South Africa with the aid of the Ministry of Information.

Prior to government’s commitment to assist the broadcaster-cum-musician, a show was held at Robin’s Park in Blantyre on July 20 to raise funds for the artist. Mbonela had been admitted at Blantyre Seventh Day Adventist before being discharged while waiting for his medical trip to South Africa.
