William Chimpeni and Sawako Nevin at the weekend became the inaugural Puresave Standard Bank Monthly-Mug champions at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC).

Playing off handicap 16, Chimpeni turned on a vintage display, hitting 11 pars in just one round which was the centrepiece of his triumph, wrapping it up with a brilliant net of 67.

“I have been playing golf for about 15 years now, but never before have I hit 11 pars in one round, a feat that I have achieved today,” said Chimpeni.

Chimpeni and Nevin carted home K75 000 cheques each and trophies.

Nevin’s quality also shone brightly in the ladies’ category as she emerged tops with a net of 35 after outclassing veteran golfer Maina Mkandawire who had a 34 net.

George Chisambo, who plays off handicap six, was the runner-up in the men’s category with a net of 72. He and Mkandawire got K50 000 each.

Aadil Parker, who was the youngest golfer in the competition, finished on a respectable third position when he was counted out on 72 net and he got K30 000 for his feat. In turn, the youthful Parker counted out Peter Mtema who finished fourth, whereas two-handicapped Adam Sailesi, who is considered among the top golfers on the local scene, was fifth with a net score of 73 and walked away with K10 000.

In subsidiary prizes, Adam Sailesi had the longest drive while Abba Jussab was nearest to the pin in the men’s section. In the ladies’ category, Regina Mwanza had the longest drive while A. King was nearest to the pin.

Standard Bank head of business marketing Ronald Tembo said the tournament marked the launch of the bank’s renewed partnership with golfers through the LGC.

“We have taken over the sponsorship of monthly mugs until December. We believe the monthly mugs will give us an opportunity to interact closely with our personal and business customers,” said Tembo.

LGC golf captain Justice Ken Manda thanked Standard Bank for coming up with the monthly mugs, “it means we are assured of golf and more golf from Standard Bank.”

A total 77 golfers took part in the event.
