He was speaking on Tuesday in Lilongwe  during the presentation of an K18 million cheque to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which members of the Chinese business community have contributed to help in preparations for the exhibition.

Said Zhang: “I have always said Malawi has a lot of investment opportunities. The forum will therefore provide the country a chance to sell itself to the world. My embassy will encourage more Chinese companies from home and other countries to attend the forum to enhance the influence of the MIF [Malawi Investment Forum] and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between companies from our two countries.”

During the same function, China also signed a memorandum  of  understanding (MoU) with the ministry to collaborate in the hosting of the mega investment forum.

Meanwhile, government has said the investment forum has attracted global attention.

Minister of Industry and Trade Joseph Mwanamvekha said almost half of the 300 expected delegates have confirmed their participation.

He said: “This is promising to become a big event. We are anticipating over 40 companies from both the local and international market. That explains why we need more partners like China, whom we have signed a MoU with today, knowing that hosting such a huge event requires enormous resources.”

The ministry has since embarked on an extensive media campaign with American cable network CNN, to help woo more investors, according to Mwanamveka.
