Members of the Chinese community under the banner of Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peace and Reunification yesterday donated assorted items worth K3.1 million to people affected by floods in Nsanje North Constituency.

Speaking when she received the items, former Nsanje North legislator Esther Mcheka-Chilenje said she was grateful for the donation.

“Nsanje North is one of the worst affected areas by floods. So far, the area has 2 322 households living in six different camps, but the total number of affected households in the constituency is 6 185.

“The area has been badly damaged; talk of the roads, the bridges. Most of the houses have also been damaged. The saddest thing is that people worked hard in their farms this year but the floods have destroyed all the crops. The people need to recover and plant again so that they have something to eat,” she said.

The Chinese community chairperson Jiang Qing Xi called on Chinese living in Malawi to make more donations to reach out to more areas affected by floods.

Last month, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds devastated 15 out of the country’s 28 districts. President Peter Mutharika declared the affected districts disaster areas.
