Chinese investor arrested for alleged theft of rail bars

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a Chinese businessperson Shen Diquan of Anshaan Steel for allegedly the third time for the same offence of theft of rail bars.

Deputy National Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude said for the third time, the suspect has contravened Section 278 of the Penal Code.

Allegedly stolen and recovered by police: rail bars

“We have arrested him twice before for the same offence and he was out on bail when we got another tip off that he was seen with rail bars which we have confiscated as evidence,” he said.

The suspect owns a steel company which manufactures burglar bars along Kanengo Lumbadzi Road and, according to Nyaude, he uses rail bars and other metals as raw materials.

“We have no problem with his business because government insists on bringing in investors, but we are worried with his crooked ways,” said Nyaude.

He said the police will fight for a stiffer penalty for the suspect to warn others who may want to destroy public infrastructure. n
