Mzuzu-based Chiputula Chess Club collected K40 000 from Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) on Tuesday at Chenda Motel for being champions of Northern Region Chess League.

The club triumphed over four others that participated in the 2014 chess tournament.

They beat Chibavi and Chasefu by 5-3 margins before whitewashing Mchengautuwa and Ngomambi by 8-0.

Captain for Chiputula Kelsi Mhango said it is good that they have defended the title.

“We are happy to have emerged winners of the tournament. It is always good to defend the title. However, this will not stand as a block, but stimulate the team to aim high and standout in the country,” said Mhango.

Speaking earlier during the prize presentation ceremony, Chessam Malawi representative Joseph Chalemba said it is the association’s aim to focus on improving chess at club level apart from schools countrywide.

“It is the mandate of the association to improve chess sport at all level. We have at least done with schools, it is also important to promote the sport at club level in all regions,” said Chalemba.
