Angry residents in Chirimba, Blantyre have demolished the township’s police unit in protest at the killing of a business person who was shot at the market yesterday afternoon.

According to Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala, a young man (whose name had not been identified as we went to press) went to a grocery shop belonging to Feston Chipinda and took milk without paying for it.

When the late Chipinda confronted the boy, a quarrel is said to have ensued between the two to the extent that Chipinda reported the matter to Chirimba Police Unit.

“As he was returning back to shop, the boy shot him on the forehead. He was rushed to Mlambe Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Divala.

While Divala attributed the demolition to people’s assumption that the victim might have been shot by police, some residents claimed that the people were angered because they felt that police did not help the victim.

“The demolition freed suspects that were being held by police,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

The people then proceeded to the boy’s house where they looted all the property and burnt a car that was parked outside the house.

As we went to press, reports indicated   that the residents had also set on fire Kabula Market which is located between Chemusa and Mbayani townships.
