Chisanu’s body expected home month end

The body of departed actor and broadcaster Hope Chisanu, who died on June 1 in the United States of America, is expected to be repatriated home by the end of this month.

A member of the family, Horace Nyaka, in an interview on Sunday said concurrent efforts to raise funds to have the body brought to Malawi are continuing and they expect his remains to be in Malawi either by June 30 or July 1.

“The family is making contributions, the community in Seattle in the US is contributing, the global community is doing the same through the GoFundMe initiative and we also have the film industry players here in Malawi who are contributing towards the cause,” he said.

Before his body is repatriated, a memorial funeral service will be held in the US, according to Nyaka.

Following his death, Chisanu’s family sounded an SOS for people to help them raise K42 million to bring his body back to Malawi.

Meanwhile, Filmmakers Association of Malawi (Fama) is championing movie screenings which are scheduled for Lilongwe and Blantyre.

One of the leaders of the initiative, film producer Charles Shemu Joyah, said the movie screenings will feature productions in which Chisanu starred such as All We Have is Us, The Last Fishing Boat, Is The President Dead? and Seasons of a Life.

Joyah told our sister newspaper Nation on Sunday: “Several people have already given something towards the fund through two WhatsApp groups of creatives and whatever was raised was later passed on to the committee.”
