Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ephraim Mganda Chiume has assured delegates to the 12th meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (Comesa) of promotion of peace in the region during his tenure as chairperson of the ministerial committee.

Chiume was speaking in Kampala, Uganda, on Tuesday after Malawi assumed leadership of the group.

He said promotion of peace is vital for economic development of the region.

“As Malawi and minister responsible, I should say here that we are honoured to take this assignment. We will ensure to promote peace as it plays a role in the regional integration and economic development,” he said.

Chiume said the meeting would help delegates come up with recommendations that will see the transformation of the region.

Outgoing chirperson, Swaziland Foreign Affairs Minister Mtiti Fakudze said the region has seen some major developments in some conflict parts of Africa.—Report by Enelless Nyale in Kampala, Uganda.
