Mtambo: Expectations were high

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation has warned the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government that is risks losing credibility and trust among Malawians if it fails to quickly bring to book all people involved in cashgate.

CHRR executive director Timothy Mtambo said in an interview with Weekend Nation the results of the May 20elections brought high expectations among Malawians regarding conclusion of the cases as people felt justice was deliberately being delayed by the then ruling People’s Party.

Mtambo observed that nothing new has materialised from the cases since DPP took over affairs at Capitol Hill three months ago.

“So far, the same junior officers who were arrested during People’s Party regime continue to be paraded in courts while other top government officials who could have taken part in the scam remain untouchable,” he said.

Mtambo has since called for more action from government if it has to meet expectations of Malawians in the fight against corruption.

“Our expectation, as a member of the civil society, was that once the people’s party is out of government, the new government would quicken the pace in handling the Cashgate issue, but what we are seeing is the opposite the same…” said Mtambo.

Minister of Information Kondwani Nankhumwa pledged action on all people involved in the theft scandal.

“DPP made a commitment to deal with the matter and we have not backtracked, we are not just releasing the names of people that were involved in the scam, we have even tightened security even to integrated financial management system,” he said.
