Civo drop points, Lions maintain unbeaten run

Listen to this article

Civo United failed to get their revenge on visiting Red Lions when they lost 2-0 at home in a TNM Super League fixture and dropped three points in the process.

Civo consequently relinquished the second position to the Zomba-based soldiers.

The civil servants were hoping to avenge the 1-0 defeat they suffered in the Presidential Cup at the hands of the Lions, but composed play and luck ensured the soldiers came out victors again on Saturday.

The hosts created hordes of chances, but poor finishing by Martin Masoatheka, Welani Nyirenda and Lusekelo Mwathengere let them down.

Gradually, the visitors came into the game and scored the first goal through Kelvin Katema in the 21st minute to silence the home fans.

The second goal was scored by Dan Katunga, 15 minutes after the resumption of the second-half. He connected a cross from Thomas Makombera, past Onani Nsengwa on goals for Civo.

Even after this goal, Civo had opportunities to level the scores, but again poor finishing cost them the three points.

Lions coach Collins Nkuna said he is happy with the win.

“Like I told you before the match, they are beatable at home. We beat them in the Presidential Cup and we have repeated the feat today. The boys played well, but we have to improve on ball possession,” said Nkuna.

Alex Masanjala blamed their loss on lack of coordination at the back.

Civo consolation was that their midfielder Alick Lihuhu was voted man of the match.

As we went to press, Lions were meeting fellow soldiers Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium and Nkuna was hoping for maximum points again.
