In an attempt to motivate players, Civo United new management said they want to pay the players K685 000 (about $2 740) they owed them last season.

In an interview on Sunday, the club’s new general secretary, Rashid Ntelela, said they have already sourced the money and what remains is paperwork to facilitate the payments.

“We owe the players K685 000 (about $2 740) as part of their signing-on fee from last season. Government has given us some money and we hope to pay the players before the next round starts. We are grateful to government as that will motivate the players,” said Ntelela.

He said the club has shown constistency of success in the past three years and as such there is need to motivate the players so that they achieve more.

One of the senior players who spoke on condition of anonymity, welcomed the development.

“Definitely this is a new breath of fresh air, although as players we are yet to be communicated to. Despite that we love the team, [although] it has been hard on us for not getting our dues. This gesture will greatly add motivation to the squad,” said the player.

Civo get a monthly subvention of K1.3 million (about $5 200) from government for its operations. However, the money has not been enough for the club. To fulfil a fixture in Blantyre, it costs a Lilongwe team an estimated K550 000 (about $2 200) for transport, accommodation and food.
