The Basement, one of Blantyre’s uptown clubs, has introduced an entertainment package called Social Sunday which seeks to tailor the economic punch among urban artists by proving them with affordable space for live shows every week.

An official of The Basement Club, Jelas Gibson, said the Social Sunday kick-starts tomorrow with the line-up of emerging urban artists such as Excess.

“Apart from promoting entertainment culture, Club Basement wants to ease the plight of the country’s urban artists who struggle to access affordable venues to maximise their economic ventures.

“With the introduction of Social Sunday, urban artists will be holding live shows with the technical support of the Club Basement’s management,” said Gibson.

He challenged the country’s urban artists to use the Social Sunday to gauge their economic value and stage prowess.

“Time has come for urban artists to realise their talents’ economic benefits,” said Gibson.

Rapper Ekicess is one of the up and coming urban artists who have lately been engaged in self-sponsored live shows for own economic benefits.

Last Saturday he organised a show at Blue Elephant which received an impressive turn up of youths in Blantyre.

Ekicess said in an interview he is looking forward to the inaugural Social Sunday, which he described as opportunity for up and coming artists.

“I have performed at Club Basement before and my show collected gate revenue in excess of K400 000 ($880),” he said.

Born Bright Chiligo, Ekicess is a maker of popular video song Wadya Ntoliro.
