Club hunting takes Russell to SuperSport

Malawi national football (Flames) striker Russell Mwafulirwa is reportedly now trying his luck at SuperSport United hoping to sign a contract after work permit delays proved futile his prospects of signing for Jomo Cosmos.

Mwafulirwa, who hinted on a possible return to Europe a fortnight ago, joined SuperSport this week, according to www.absapremiership.ensight.co.za

The 29-year-old spent some two months at Cosmos. It is unclear how his move to SuperSport could fast-track his work permit application.

Cosmos’ local contact Ben Chiwaya on Wednesday corroborated the South Africa media report of the Flames man at SuperSport who are also home to Atusaye Nyondo.

If he passes trials at SuperSport, he could start afresh work permit application with the South Africa Home Affairs Department.

The former Absa Premiership champions SuperSport could still register the out-of-contract striker this season even though there are but eight matches left in the championship campaign.

Mwafulirwa had been on trial at both Moroka Swallows and former club Jomo Cosmos since returning to the country after three years of playing in Sweden.

Mwafulirwa left Ajax Cape Town in 2008 for IFK Norrkoping, where he spent the last four seasons in both the first and second divisions of Sweden before coming to the end of his contract.
