Second-placed Cobbe Barracks blasted their way past hosts Bvumbwe Research with a 5-3 win on Thursday to slice leaders Surestream Academy’s lead to a point in the South Region Football Association Premier Division.
McPeter Makwale’s double and a goal each from George Pahuwa, Isaac Vizyalona and Luke Muyawa took Cobbe’s tally to 85 points from 36 games. They are one game more than Surestream who have 86 points.
Cobbe are now taking aim at Surestream, who they confront tomorrow at Chiwembe Technical Centre Ground.
The Zomba soldiers coach, Chifundo Masapula, said they are eyeing Super League promotion.
“It is very possible. Surestream are leading the table, but we beat them in the first-round. On paper, this should be a difficult match, but we know what it would take for us to execute our game plan,” Masapula said.
Surestream, whose preparations were hampered by heavy rains that made training difficult at Surestream Stadium, have in the second-round been dropping points against giants such as Max Bullets and Evirom.
While they can string uninterrupted passes with ease and have a wealth of young talent such as captain Ernest Tambe, Isaac Mwale and Benard Chimaimba, being efficient upfront has been a challenge for Surestream.
After last Sunday’s draw against Evirom, Surestream technical director Peter Mponda attributed the costly draws to the fact that “opposing teams are now respecting us”.
