The 2014 Edition of the Copa Coca Cola finals started in Dedza yesterday where all six education divisions are competing for the K500 000 grand prize.

According to Carlsberg Malawi brands manager (non-alcoholics), Titha Mbilizi, all the teams arrived in Dedza on Thursday and the games, which will be played over three days, started yesterday.

“We welcomed the Copa boys on Thursday in Dedza for their last residential camping before commencement of the finals. The atmosphere was great as we had a mobile fun track dishing out music, giving the people of Dedza a feel of the Copa Coca-Cola finals,” said Mbilizi.

Outlining the programme, Mbilizi said today is for quarter-finals while third place and finals will take placetomorrow.

She said they received word from government that Education and Sports ministers might grace the finalstomorrow.

Mbilizi said as sponsor, Carlsberg Malawi Limited is impressed with the way the tournament has been run.

“There has been tremendous growth in the way the tournament has been managed. I am talking about issues of discipline and that the level of football has grown. Credit should go to teachers and trainers. We witnessed great football and the talent has been translated into national duty. It being a World Cup year, we were pleased to share the experience with youngsters in the country,” she said.

Mbilizi also expressed satisfaction with the way the Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) has managed the sponsorship.

She, however, said Carlsberg Malawi Limited will announce sponsorship package for the 2015 tournament at the launch next year.

Massa general secretary Blackson Malamula said his organisation is indebted to Carlsberg Malawi Limited for the sponsorship.

“Though we are yet to be communicated to, I thank them for committing to renew the sponsorship. They have always been there for us,” said Malamula.

Central West Education Division (Cwed) are the defending champions.
