Communities hail Kalulu Police Unit construction
Communities around Muona-Fatima in Senior Chief Mlolo in Nsanje District have hailed the district council for unveiling plans to construct a police unit.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday on the sidelines of a meeting organised by Malawi Economic Justice Network (Mejn) to deliberate the council’s budget, Nsanje District Council chairperson Rose Makiyi said the area is in dire need of the facility to ensure safety of people’s lives and property.
She said “Our area has a lot of security issues that threaten the people and economic stability of the area.
“This is an area where people usually take the law into their own hands.”
Makiyi, who is also councillor for Kalulu Ward in Nsanje North constituency, said they hope that the police unit will guarantee the people peace and conduct their businesses freely.
On his part, Mlolo Area Development Committee chairperson Gift Khakana thanked the Catholic Church for providing space at their Trinity Hospital where Kalulu Police Unit has also been operating.
He thanked Nsanje Police Station for deploying police officers and a motorcycle to ensure quick response to crime.
Nsanje District Council director of planning and development Smith Mnenula said the project will be funded by the Governance to Enable Service Delivery to the tune of K184.4 million. The project is expected to be finished in March 2024.
“The project will involve construction of administration block with flush toilets fully furnished, two staff houses, two double-door toilets and water reticulation,” he said.
Mnenula said the project is expected to benefit about 68 000 people, with 38 000 being women and 30 000 men.
