Community policing members asked to refrain from crime

Community policing members at Kapiri Trading Centre in Mchinji have been asked to refrain from crime for communities to take them seriously.

Chairperson of Sector Community Policing Grant Khola said this recently during a meeting with members of community policing amid complaints that some of them are taking the law into their own hands and are engaging in crime.

“It should be you bringing security in the communities instead of breaking the law. It is sad to hear that community policing members are involved in the very malpractice they are supposed to fight. You should live by example and be good citizens,” he said.

Khola said it is wrong for members of community policing to regard themselves as the police.

Of late, the trading centre has fallen victim to armed robberies that have terrorised people in the area.

In one of the recent cases, robbers stole about K500 000 from a family at the trading centre, wounding the man and his wife in the process.—Mana
