Comsip to train Covid-19 cash relief fund recipients

Community Savings and Investment Promotion (Comsip) Cooperative Union Limited has lined up savings and business management trainings for people who have been listed to receive the Covid-19 relief fund from government.

The union has since recruited 104 workers who will be allocated in various areas across the country to provide such lessons.

In an interview after a week-long orientation workshop for 19 case workers who will be attached in Mzuzu, Comsip chief executive officer Tenneson Gondwe said the union intends to  equip the recipients of the Covid-19 relief funds with knowledge on how they can run small-scale businesses from the savings.

“We are expecting that from the monthly funds they will be getting, they should be able to save some and use the rest to run small businesses. This will strengthen their livelihoods,” said Gondwe.

According to information from Mzuzu City Council (MCC), 19 000 households are expected to get the Covid-19 cash aid in the city.

MCC assistant director of planning and development Marriana Kumvula Banda said the council hopes that the money which the recipients will be receiving will be multiplied through the businesses they will embark on.

From next week, eligible households in urban cities will, for three months, start receiving the K35 000 relief grant through mobile cash transfer.
