Concerned KA citizen cries foul

A concerned citizen seeking to stop Kayelekera Uranium Mine from ejecting waste water into nearby rivers has lamented being left in the dark on the future of the court case.

High Court judge Dingiswayo Madise was expected to hear the injunction application last week at the High Court in Mzuzu, but the one-off case plunged into uncertainty after the court postponed the hearing indefinitely, with the owners of the mine, Paladin Africa, absent.

Paladin Malawi chief Greg Walker said the court informed him in advance that the judge had rescheduled the case to an unspecified date.

However, Karonga-based Silungwe, who travelled to Mzuzu for the case, cried foul, alleging he did not receive prior notice of the postponement.

Said Silungwe: “I wonder why I did not get the said notice.”

Karonga residents want the court to grant an order restraining the release of the uranium trailing water into Sere River and neighbouring waterways which flow into Lake Malawi.
