Congrats Kananji and Wanderers

Listen to this article

Congratulations to Eliah Kananji on winning the Carlsberg Cup for the second-year running albeit with a different team, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers. This is a guy who was unceremoniously booted out of the Bullets camp for allegedly not possessing the up-market personality of the coach, really?

Kananji has proved he is a master tactician of the lot winning the cup with two different clubs. However, it is unfortunate that violence seems to be everywhere football is taking place. If it is not on the pitch or at the stadium, then it is happy go supporters getting knocked out on the road in the milieu of celebrating victory of their team.

I know the Nomads had been starved of victory in recent months as they have always been at the receiving end of Bullets’ dominance in their encounters and last weekend they were all over town celebrating the win and rightly, so. But did they have to block all the roads because they had one over their bitter rivals?

It was not a pleasant experience for most motorists to endure hours of torture, waiting for the roads to clear. Imagine among the motorists were Bullets’ diehards like Tony Morton Kawenje Chirwa. Would a Bullets fan stomach taunts that were being spewed on the day? Kumacheza bwino ndi amzanu Manoma.

Although the European League is on bye this weekend, it cannot pass without a comment, especially with regard to the hits and misses at the close of the transfer window in Europe. Arsenal fans are the most bitter with Arsene Wenger who despite having a $200 million transfers cheque, managed only to spend $10 million on goalie Petr Cech.

Most supporters were looking forward to signing a world-class striker in the mould of Karim Benzima or Edson Cavani and at least a world-class defending midfielder to ease pressure on young Francis Coquellein. But I trust in Wenger’s philosophy of promoting young players.

Look at Chelsea, they buy every season, but they play bad football and look like they are ready to surrender the championship already just after a few games. They have failed to prise away John Stones from Everton and instead they have bought a $4 million Hector from Reading. Very unlike Chelsea.

The only team that has bought with purpose is City. They have bought players in all departments. Sterling, Bony, De Bryune, Atomende and they look ominous.

Let us not talk about whether Van Gaal overpaid in acquiring Martial as suggested by Wenger. Time will tell. By the way, why can Wenger not look into his plate instead of being worried about serving others in their plates.

Ernest Mtawali has made significant changes to the squad that will play against Swaziland this weekend, including dropping the Flames captain Joseph Kamwendo, Fischer Kondowe and Essau Kanyenda.

It has been long time coming for these old players. Mtawali must also fine-tune the defence. We do not want to concede last-minute goals. Limbikani Mzava who has been promoted to captain should lead by example and stop making schoolboy blunders that cost the Flames matches at the Cosafa recently.
