Corporate Sports Festival rolls into action
The Corporate Sports Festival that Southern Region Netball Committee (SRNC) has organised to raise funds for the introduction of the country’s inaugural Under-20 netball league rolls into action tomorrow at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).
According to SRNC general secretary Charity Gondwe, the event will start with aerobics at 7am and will be followed by football, basketball, volleyball and netball games two hours later.
“We will start off the event with aerobics, which will see individuals paying K1 000 participation fee. All the games will be played normally, except football, which will be done on seven-a-side format. We urge people to come in their large numbers to support this initiative,” she said.
Meanwhile, over 30 teams have registered for the fundraising event in all the available disciplines and companies such as Alliance Capital, EcoBank, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) and Finca have come in with sponsorship.
NBM marketing manager Annie Magola will be the guest of honour and Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Khungekile Matiya is expected to grace the occasion.
SRNC has targeted to raise over K5 million from the festival so that, by next month, they can have a strong netball league, which will be used to prepare the Under-20 national team players for the Under-20 Region Five Games this December.
Lack of netball development structures, including the absence of a junior league, is considered one of the contributing factors to the Senior Malawi Queens’ recent poor form. The Queens slumped from sixth to the seventh place for the first time at the Commonwealth Games a few months ago.
