Corruption, nepotism claims dominate Nice meeting

Corruption and nepotism claims in relation to distribution of disaster relief items dominated an interface meeting National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) organised on Monday in Mulanje.

Nice organised the meeting between duty bearers and the community at Chinyama Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mabuka in the district to provide a forum for the two parties to discuss and resolve governance issues affecting their communities.

corruptionHowever, people from the area complained that they are not happy with the way disaster relief items were being distributed as those that were receiving were not affected.

It was also alleged that some leaders in the area were snatching relief cards that would allow them to receive the relief items.

“We don’t want them to handle the distribution items anymore because they [distributors] are selective,” claimed one woman.

In response, councillor for the area, Stanford Namanya, said the problem was that relief items come through donations and in phases, a development he said creates suspicion during distribution.

But Moses Kaduya from the area dismissed Namanya’s explanation, saying there was evidence that relief items distribution was unfair as they were equally affected.

Mulanje Nice district civic education officer Twambilire Mwabungulu said corruption suspicions over relief items as well as Local Development Fund (LDF) projects have been dominating the agenda in most meetings the has been conducting in the district.
