Police in Blantyre have arrested a couple, Lameck Alfred (29) and Sigere Alfred (20), for allegedly abandoning their eight-month-old baby boy.

Blantyre Police spokesperson Lameck Thembachako said on May 23 2013, the suspects left the baby behind Skyway Institute of Management and Development (Simard).

He said some students from the institution found the baby and handed it to Blantyre Police.

“After getting the baby, police took it to social welfare offices where they took it to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. On Friday, the mother approached Blantyre Police to lodge a complaint about her missing child.

“After interrogation, it was established that she left her two children at Wenela Bus Depot because her husband, who is a caller boy, left home for three days without providing the family with basic needs,” said Thembachako.

He said when the woman left the children with her husband, he decided to follow her while carrying both of them. He decided to drop the baby so that the mother should carry it.

“The mother just proceeded home without carrying the baby and did not know that her husband had carried one baby. When the mother went to Wenela last Friday to breastfeed the baby, the couple realised that their son had been taken by unknown people,” he said.

The couple comes from Liti Village in Traditional Authority Kumtumanji, Zomba.
