CR Pool Singles kicks off Saturday

The K1 million (about $4 000) Presidential Ladies Pool Singles tournament starts today in the Central Region, according to tournament director Ben Kaukonde.

Sixteen ladies have registered for the three-week battle to be played at Zhux Club in Area 3.

Among the contestants are notables Funny Chimwala, Tionge Mphande, Tiwonge Zilahowa, Modetser Kachulu, Susan Mphande, Marriam Mapira, Emma Chima, Sinta Phiri, Sabina Mkandawire, Maggie Phiri and Esther Banda of Alliance One.

“The games will start from 1pm. We will play best-of-three knockout format. We are requesting all the registered players and those wishing to participate in the tournament to come in time and witness the draw,” said Kaukonde.

Top three ladies will represent the region at the national finals to be played in Mzuzu on June 30 where the winner will walk away with a trophy and K25 000 whereas the runner-up will receive K20 000 (about $80). Third and fourth best players will get K15 000 (about $60) and K10 000 (about $40) respectively.

Defending champion Chimwala confessed that she is anticipating a tough ride since most ladies have improved their performances.

Adventures, Hakuna Matata Youth and Mango are in Group A. Incognito, Red Sea and S5 are in Group B whereas Group C has Treatment, Siege and FIB/Gulliver. Games will be played at neutral venues.
