Twenty women referees in the Central Region have resigned.

According to findings by The Nation, out of 23 women recruited between 2010 and 2011, only Martha Nyirenda, Charity Ndozi Mlumbe and Aggie Chamaere are active.

While confirming the development, both Central Region Referees Committee (CRRC) general secretary Oscar Kossam and Fifa referees instructor Ella Banda described it as a setback.

Banda, who facilitated the recruitment of the referees, urged CRRC to motivate the women by giving them more game time.

“It becomes discouraging to them when male referees officiate women football games at their expense. I am not saying men should not officiate women games, rather priority should be given to women,” said Banda.

Memory Chihana said she is no longer active because of pressure of work.

“I work at Golden Peacock Hotel where I work even on weekend, hence I do not have time to go and officiate games,” said Chihana.

Another inactive referee, who asked for anonymity, claimed that some male executive members are also to blame for their tendency of wanting to be going out with the female referees.

“This is discouraging. After I refused, I was not assigned games to officiate, so I just decided to quit,” she said.

  1. 1. Ella Banda is not a FIFA Referees Instructor. She has not even reached a grade of CAF referees Instructor. She is just a Futroll 3 Local Technical Instructor. TAKE NOTE! To Confirm ask FAM or Mr. Kalombo.
    2. These women referees are just lazy. They can say that Lilongwe Referees Committee amawafunsira, mabodza! None of them has never passed the FIFA fitness test like their Blantyre counterparts the likes of Grace Msiska, Chikondi Mpindo and the Zomba based top female referee Bernadeta Mkwimbira. These are the women who real have the passion for the game, who real know why they joined the refereering profession and not awaobwerera zifukwawa. Some have been in the system for more than 2 years but still they can not afford to handle a match involving primary school teams, the whole game can end with all offside goals, and they expext to officiate in the womens league. Imeneyo ndeimafuna kuimbiridwa ndi anthu osadziwa chochita? And for your information, we are so much worried of what will be come of Malawi Female Referees at FIFA Level after this pool of Msiska and Mkwimbira is gone. Let them perform! Pass fitness test and get promotion to grade 2 else they will remain at grade 3.
