One of the Cunima students, Melissa Msowoya, said many people are languishing in the country’s prisons after committing various offenses due to ignorance of the laws. She said: “Therefore, legal clinics are important because they help communities to understand  how the laws work and what steps they must follow when they need legal representation.”

Cunima Practical Legal Studies head of department Tamandani Kadyampakeni said the purpose of the legal clinic was to deepen the students’ practical skills.

He said the university aims to produce top-notch law students who will become reliable lawyers in the country.

Among others, the legal clinic bordered on what the law says about marriage, the rights spouses and children have in the family and who are eligible to get married.

Last year, Cunima conducted similar sessions at Chikuli in Blantyre Rural
