Faizan Global Relief Foundation has donated food and non-food items to Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors at Chilumba Camp in Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa District.

Speaking on Monday when they handed over the items, Faizan Global Relief Foundation head in Africa Muhammad Usman Madani said they came up with the donation after assessing the situation in the district.

He said: “We inspected all areas affected by the disaster and established what the survivors need. This is why we are distributing blankets, maize flour, soya corn blend flour, soya pieces, salt, sugar, soap and beans to survivors.”

Madani said they reached out to 1 000 people at the camp after doing the same in Chilobwe in Blantyre, Phalombe, Mulanje and Chikwawa.

“From now, we will reconstruct schools that were damaged by floods because we understand that it is important to teach a child to catch a fish instead of giving him the fish,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries William Stephano thanked the organisation for the support.

He said people at the camp spent days without humanitarian support.

“We will ensure that we use the items for their intended purpose,” he said.

Chikwawa South legislator Ilyas Karim (Malawi Congress Party) also thanked the organisation for the donation.

“I am pleased that many survivors have received support,” said Stephano.

Karim appealed to other well-wishers to help the survivors get back on their feet.
