Ministry of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi has advised district commissioners (DCs) from the Central Region not to politicise relief food distribution.

The minister said this on Friday at Mponela in Dowa District where he presided over a stakeholders coordinating meeting for the 2018/19 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.

“We are asking everyone taking part in food distribution to exercise neutrality. For the DCs, we are urging them not to allow politicians to take advantage of the relief food items for campaigning,” he said.

Speaking earlier, World Food Programme (WFP) head of programmes Bernard Quardo commended the Malawi Government for taking full responsibility of providing relief food to the affected people.

The meeting that brought together officials from the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs, humanitarian partners and DCs, was organised to discuss the progress made, challenges being encountered in the implementation of the 2018/19 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme and how best to proceed with the programme.

In the 2018/19 programme, the Malawi Government committed about 138 000 metric tonnes of maize worth about K20.8 billion and K3.5 billion for logistics.
