Do more research on AI—Mubas

Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (Mubas) says there is need for more research in artificial intelligence and machine learning to foster knowledge transfer and proper application.

Amelia Taylor, lecturer in the department of information, communications and technology said this in an interview on Tuesday following a two-day symposium on machine learning and artificial intelligence.

She said: “These events started in 2019 focusing on use of machine learning for solving particular problems. They target students, academics, researchers and young practitioners who want to learn more about machine learning.

“They need to understand what it is, especially young professionals when they take up positions in different organisations.”

Tayor, who is also one of the leads at Mubas’ Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, said the symposium has had an impact since it was launched.

“It’s good to see that people want to learn about opportunities, challenges and pitfalls associated with machine learning.

Mubas head of ICT Anthony Ziba also said in an interview that comprehensive research in machine learning is important because it can influence the society positively or negatively depending on the context.

“For us to benefit, we need to share ideas on the direction our researchers are taking. It is important to have people who know exactly what they are doing,” he said. The symposium drew 180 participants from students, academics, researchers and practitioners from the industry.
