Dodma gives Salima people relief food

Department of Disaster Management Affairs has distributed relief maize flour to households affected by dry spells in Salima District.

Speaking on Saturday in Traditional Authority Khombedza, Salima district disaster risk management officer Gloria Chinangwa said the relief came after conducting an assessment of the affected households in the district.

“The relief is targeting at least 4 000 households from T/As Khombedza, Kuluunda, Maganga, Ndindi and Kambwiri who suffered from floods and dry spells that affected their crops in the 2023/24 farming season,” she said.

A beneficiary Thomas Yohane, from Kamanula Village, said his family had run out of food.

“I am pleased with this support. My family was struggling to find food due to exorbitant prices of maize in our area. Sometimes we were going to bed on empty stomachs,” he said.

Another beneficiary from Chilambanjala Village, Agnes Edward said the flour will save her family from doing piecework and instead use the time to work in their field.

“I have eight children and it is not easy to find food for all of them. This bag will enable my family to have food for over a week while I work in my field,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dodma is also collaborating with other partners to help people who faced the same problem in the district.

The 2024 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee estimates that about 5.7 million Malawians will be food-insecure between October this year and March 2025.
