Donton was an accomplished scholar—Chimunthu Banda

The departed Mzimba Central MP Professor Donton Mkandawire was an accomplished educationist whose experience and contributions to Parliament will be missed, Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda has said.

Speaking at a funeral service for the late Mkandawire at his Area 10 residence in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on Wednesday, Chimunthu Banda told hundreds of mourners that included President Bingu wa Mutharika, leader of opposition John Tembo, former vice-president Justin Malewezi, former official government hostess Mama Cecilia Kadzamira, that the deceased served his country with dedication.

“He was a member of the Parliamentary Services Commission and Legal Affairs Committee and to the House in general. His experience mattered and made a difference,” he said.

Family member Dean Lungu said the late Mkandawire died of cancer, leaving a wife, three daughters and three grandchildren.

Earlier, DPP first vice-president Goodall Gondwe said the late Mkandawire has left a huge gap in the party and government while his daughter Ireen Morgas said there could not be words to describe the departed parliamentarian.

Born on January 1 1941, Mkandawire was educated at Zomba Secondary School, Domasi Teachers’ College, Claremont Teachers’ College in Western Australia before proceeding to University of Western Australia where he obtained a diploma in education and Bachelor’s of Education degree in 1966.

In 1971, he obtained his Master of Education at University of Pittsburgh and later got his PhD in Education in 1975 at the same college.

His body will be laid to rest at Kanyama Village in Euthini, Mzimba on Thursday.
