DPP meets 50:50 ratio in Lilongwe City South East

Democratic Progressive Party has set a 50:50 record for the position of councillors for Lilongwe City South East Constituency in the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

The party will feature three female shadow councillors, namely Linda Mpela  (Tsabango 2 Ward), Zebunisar Kunje Tsabango 1 and Stella Nyasulu  (Kaliyeka Ward) while the male aspirants are the incumbent councillor for Chilinde 2 Ward Gibson Nyirenda, Rusel Golden (Chilinde1) and Audron Phiri for State House Ward.

The party’s six aspiring councillors presented their nomination papers alongside aspiring member of Parliament Fackson Chipapa Walapa at Chiwoko Primary School polling centre in the constituency yesterday.

Walapa said he decided to contest for the parliamentary seat to bring development in the area while one of the female shadow councillors, Mpela, said she wants to develop Tsabango 2 Ward, boost economic activities for women and inspire young girls.

Presidential, parliamentary and local government election aspirants have been presenting their nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from Monday until today.

Ministry of Gender, Women, Children and Social Welfare and various non-governmental organisations, including UN Women, initiated the 50:50 campaign to promote equal political representation of men and women in elected positions.n
