Dwangwa ‘survive’ relegation

Listen to this article

Dwangwa United have technically survived relegation because of stronger goal difference than their drop rivals Civo United, PremierBet Wizards and Karonga United.

Their survival has also been necessitated by the three rivals’ unfavourable results over the weekend. Civo lost to Mafco 0-1 while Karonga after beating Epac 4-2, lost 0-5 to Silver Strikers and Wizards were beaten by Moyale 2-1.

The Nation analysis of Super League of Malawi statistics released yesterday, shows that Dwangwa has a minus-eight goal difference while Karonga has a minus-33, Wizards has minus-27 while Civo has minus-16.

Dwangwa, with a game to go, has already bagged 30 points which is the maximum the other three teams can attain after winning all their matches.

To overtake Dwangwa, Karonga must beat league leaders Kamuzu Barracks (KB) by a 26-goal margin in their final game while Wizards must win their final match with a 20-goal margin or hope that Dwangwa lose their remaining game by a similar margin.

Second from bottom Civo, currently with 21 points, need to win their remaining three games by scoring nine goals against none to overtake Dwangwa.

The struggling Civil Servants, who are yet to win a second round match will face Nyasa Big Bullets, Azam Tigers and Max Bullets. But they will be given free three points and two goals from the match against disbanded Max.

Dwangwa coach Mcdonald Mtetemera said he was pleased that they have a massive chance of remaining in the top flight league.

”We have come from far. It has not been an easy season but we sustained our focus especially in the last six matches,” he said.

Dwangwa face KB on December 31 at Chitowe ground and Mtetemera has warned the army side not to expect an easy match.

”What I want is that we should beat KB to trigger relegation survival celebrations with our supporters. The win will also send a message that we did not survive by fluke,” he said.

KB coach Billy Phambala has said they will treat both their remaining matches with the seriousness they deserve. n
