Eagles ready to spoil BB’s hopes

Big Bullets are in Lilongwe today to face Blue Eagles in the Fellowship Association of Malawi (Fama) Top Eight finals at Civo Stadium. Bullets are hoping for their first silverware in over a decade.

But the Standard Bank Cup title holders, Blue Eagles, will want to shatter Bullets’ dreams.

“We want to add the Fama Cup on our shelf. Bullets will have a rude awakening because we won’t be lenient with them and I do not think Bullets will offer much resistance,” said Eagles chairperson Elijah Kachikuwo.

The K3.5 million (about $21 000) prize in the winner’s purse itself is lucrative.

The road to the finals was rocky for both teams. Bullets had to beat rivals MTL Wanderers and Red Lions while Eagles beat Civo United and Epac FC.

“Generally, our playing has been impressive. There is coordination between strikers and midfielders,” said Kachikuwo.

Despite losing two key midfielders—Philip Masiye (police training) and Lot Chawinga (military training)—Eagles have not faltered. The combination of John Banda, Innocent Bokosi and Ben Hojani has been effective in the past three games.

Bullets, on the other hand, have revived the commitment of coach Edington Ng’onamo and his assistant Gerald Phiri Snr to see the team succeeding.

The experience of Grant Lungu, Fischer Kondowe and Jelesi Lufeyo has blended well with up-and-coming players such as Godfrey Masonda and Gabadinho Mhango.

“The rebuilding exercise has been successful. The fact that we have reached this stage speaks a successful story. We are going to Lilongwe to win. We have proved that we are a good team by beating Wanderers and Red Lions,” Ng’onamo said on Wednesday.

Silver Strikers and Civo United will curtain-raise the finals which are expected to draw a huge crowd.

In a related development, Fama secretary Japhet Majekete will travel to Zimbabwe next week to arrange a date for an international bonanza with Malawian teams.
