Eagles stun Bullets
An emergency meeting convened by Blue Eagles management last week seemed to have worked wonders for the Malawi Police Service outfit which yesterday stunned Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 at Nankhaka in Lilongwe.
The Blantyre-based giants were hoping to collect maximum points from their Central Region trip, only to be stopped in their tracks by a resilient opponent.
Chisomo Chilasa’s 81st minute strike gave Eagles their second win in six matches. The victory was a relief for coach Audrow Makonyola. “I am happy that we have won.
We were under pressure to start winning matches. But I told my players that that’s part of the game. Football is a game of wonders. Look, today we have won against Bullets,” he said.
Bullets assistant coach Elia Kananji conceded that it was not their day. “We did not play well. We must accept defeat,” he said.
Eagles are now on position 10 with eight points while Bullets are third.
At Chtowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Be Forward Wanderers survived Dwangwa United scare as they had to rely on a late lone goal from Peter Wadabwa to collect maximum points.
Team manager Steve Madeira described the performance as the worst in years. “When playing away, you must win at all cost even if you are playing badly. This was the worst I have seen Wanderers playing may be in five years, but what mattered was the three points,” he said.
In Mzuzu, Silver Strikers kept up their impressive performance as they beat Chitipa United 2-0 through a Mathews Sibale brace.
But Chitipa United coach Kondwani Mwalweni blamed their defeat on poor officiation. “We cannot win in a situation where officiation is so poor,” he said.
Silver coach Lovemore Fazili thanked his players for the win.
“I am happy with the way our players displayed today. Collecting three points in a match against a team which is fighting for the first win is not a joke,” he said.
In other matches, Blantyre United held Azam Tigers 3-3 at Chilomoni Stadium.
Jide Mbandambanda scored a hat trick for Blantyre United while Tigers scored through Luke Chima, Frazer Menyani and Dan Kumwenda.
Defending champions Kamuzu Barracks (KB) are still sailing in troubled waters.
The soldiers were held oneall by Civil Sporting Club at Civo Stadium.
Zinjani Yona scored and early goal for KB, but the Civil Servants equalised through a penalty converted by Isaac Msiska.
After yesterday matches, Red Lions still lead the log table with 12 points followed by PremierBet Wizards who are on bye.
The battle for points resumes this afternoon as Bullets take on Masters Security at Dedza Stadium while Silver wrap their trip to the North against Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium.
