About 1 000 people gathered at Katoto Secondary School Ground on Saturday to witness 80 youths from Mzuzu as they showcased their talent while civic educating the masses on reproductive and personal hygiene issues.

The talent show, which included poetry, drama, singing, dancing and taekwondo, is an initiative by a charitable organisation Apause as part of their effort to empower the youths on sexual reproductive issues.

“What we are doing today is a normal sex education session, but in an enjoyable way. We are communicating with the youths to understand the pressure and consequences of early sexual involvement among other reproductive information and HIV and Aids in an entertaining way. This has been the best way to attract more youths to come for the session,” explained Apause project officer Peter Mumba.

According to Mumba, the project runs workshops in schools and youth groups on topics such as hand washing, oral hygiene and waste management.

“We want to have a young generation that has lower rates of sexually transmitted disease and infections. We want to see youths that are empowered and self reliant, able to make informed decisions concerning their health, social and economic life,” he said.

Form Three Katoto Secondary School poet, Yona Gondwe, 17, emerged the overall winner having recited a Tonga poem that explains the dangers of early sex.

The lad went away with a cellphone and T-shirt as his price, courtesy of Airtel.

And breakdancer, 20-year-old Clifton Kondeni, gained the second position while Taekwondo Boys trailed on third position.
