The Joyce Banda administration was a talking point at the Aids 2012 Conference in Washington DC for taking strides to embrace HIV positive persons and sexual minorities, including homosexuals.

Music superstar Sir Elton John, a confessed gay, on Monday spoke passionately about the need to embrace all people who are HIV positive regardless of their sexual orientation, according to a report on Zodiak Online.

Malawi recently announced that it will repeal and review some of the laws that criminalise homosexuality.

According to Zodiak Online, the musician made a key note address at a panel discussion that was asking the question: ‘Can Public-Private Partnerships Help Those who Think Globally, Act Locally?”

His speech drew constant applause from the packed room as he urged governments to put in place policy changes to protect sexual minorities, reported Zodiak Online.

More than 21 000 delegates from about 195 countries are attending the conference under the theme ‘Turning the Tide Together’.
