Empowering women, girls through pageant

While Malawians wait for the Miss Malawi beauty contest, another pageant has been introduced. It is called the Miss Glam and Glory. The pageant seeks to unearth beauty and talent from all corners of the country while promoting education for the girl child. NPL’s EDITH GONDWE caught up with Faith Kaunde who is Miss Glam and Glory Project Manager for details.

Kaunde: The competition is just a plaform to identify passionate models

Q

: What is the inspiration behind the pageant?

A

: The Miss Glam and Glory Malawi is a corporate social responsibility project that is being implemented across the country by Glam and Glory International, with the aim of identifying models who are going to be brand ambassadors of Glam and Glory.

The models upon being ambassadors, will be trained to make reusable sanitary pads and they will be training their respective communities that they represent.

Secondly the models are going to be equipped to make their respective communities aware of safe cosmetics and, last but not least, Miss Glam and Glory is aiming at identifying and promoting local talents as well as promotion of modelling, fashion and designing as a career.

Therefore, the competition is just a platform to identify the passionate models who are going to do the tasks mentioned above.

Q

: How are the girls for the competition being identified?

A

: The girls are being identified through the forms that are being circulated in all secondary and higher learning schools in Malawi as well as youth clubs and the minimum age for the participant is 18 years.

Q

: Why is the competition targeting all the districts in the country?

A

: If you look at our objectives mentioned above, no one is being left behind, and as a corporate social responsibility project, Glam and Glory understands that its products are found in every district in this country, so we want to reach out and help everyone through the crowned queens at community, district, regional and national level.

Q

: How has the journey been like so far?

A

: So far, the journey has been wonderful, we are getting support from the communities and the chiefs are always there during our functions and we are happy that local talents are being identified, reusable sanitary pads and other sanitary packages are being donated. So far, we have at least 30 models in the six districts that we have.

Q

: Explain about the girl empowerment aspect in detail

A

: You may agree with me that in Malawi a girl child can be absent from school for so many days in one term just because she is having a monthly period and cannot afford to buy sanitary pads. So, through this project, a traditional leader is requested to give names of under privileged girls and young women and Glam and Glory donates to them sanitary packages which includes reusable sanitary pads. Through this initiative, girl child education is being promoted.

Q

: What do you want parents to know?

A

: What we want our dear parents and guardians to know is that, this beauty pageant is just but a platform to identify passionate girls who are ready to help their communities by being queens of their communities and contribute towards girl’s child education as well as serving their communities from harmful cosmetics.

Q

: Any additional comments?

A

: Miss Glam and Glory is an ongoing beauty contest and it is there to empower women through skills transfer and help a girl child stay in school.

We would also like to appeal to organisations, government and companies to come and partner with us on this life-changing journey. With a little something you can reach out to someone somewhere.n
