Epac rebuff FAM over Zonda case

Epac FC refused to attend a hearing Football Association of Malawi (FAM) arranged at the weekend to clear a controversy surrounding the contract of the club’s former player Pilirani Zonda.

Zonda, who has now signed for Big Bullets, claimed Epac had no power over him because he was a free agent and that the signature the club claimed to be his on the copy of contractual documents, whose expiry date was December 31 2015, is not his.

However, FAM player transfer systems manager (TSM) Casper Jangale said yesterday that they proceeded with the hearing and they will decide on course of action after they release a verdict today.

Epac general secretary Roy Mdechi confirmed yesterday that they indeed refused to attend the hearing and that they do not fear any punishment from FAM for their defiance.

“We refused to attend the meeting as we do not see why we should proceed with that issue when the player has now signed a contract with Bullets, who have already shown commitment to pay his transfer fees.

“We do not know what FAM is up to. Nevertheless, let them do whatever pleases them,” said Mdechi.

But Jangale said they transacted the matter in the absence of Epac officials because they want to establish if indeed Zonda signed the contract with them.

“The controversy has to be cleared and those found to be in the wrong side of the law have to be punished accordingly. Just wait for the verdict before you know what course of action we will take against the culprits,” said Jangale.

Zonda sought FAM’s intervention after he realised that Epac were refusing to release him to Bullets unless a transfer fee of K2.5 million (US$5 952) was paid.

The player’s dispute with Epac let his family members to recently resort to seeking God’s intervention through overnight prayers and fasting in search of the truth on the matter.
