Ethiopia’s Walias are living no stone unturned in their quest to qualify for 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and sent their coach Goran Stevanovic to watch last Saturday’s match between the Flames and Benin.

The Flames’ win determined the final slot of Group B which also has Alegeria and Mali.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu yesterday said the development speaks volumes of how serious the Ethiopians are in their quest to win the group and qualify for the next African football safari.

Stevanovic, who was hired as Ethiopia coach in April this year, was captured watching the match from the Covered Stand.

“That’s how serious our friends are. We’ll have to use any tactics in the book because the battle is going to get tougher,” said Nyamilandu.

He also admitted that on paper, Mali’s Eagles and the Desert Foxes of Algeria are the odds-on favourites based on their records and quality, while Ethiopia could be the dark horses.

“Nevertheless, we are ready for the showdown, the only challenge is funding because we have already exhausted the K70 million funding from government meant for this financial year. We also exhausted the first tranche [K50 million] sponsorship for this year from Carlsberg and we’ll be meeting the Minister of Sports to map the way forward,” said Nyamilandu.
